First wear it , feel it and when you are comfortable then half the job is done.
Try knowing how to handle its pleats and drapes while walking/sitting etc.
There is always a sensual feel in sari , so enjoy wearing it.
After you are prepared to wear it [ with proper drapes/ pleats/ pins etc] the next thing comes is your hairstyle and make up, so go to a saloon where they have knowledge about Indian style or someone who is good in Indian styling.
I personally feel many blondes who wear sari are overdone in their make-up ,so go minimal. If someone says to you that apply a dot or bindi on your head or wear heavy gold studs etc then do it only when it looks good on you otherwise reject them straight.

If you wear it right, you will look amazing in the saree, wear it right, probably get your Indian friend who gifted you the saree to help.

No doubt saree is even better for anyone. Saree is the most dignified dress a woman can wear. Always wear saree below navel that is the best way.
