At the time of the removal Cherokee were living in houses, were farmers or plantation owners, had a written language, schools, and had taken their case to remain on their land to the Supreme Court and won. Many were not allowed to put on shoes or coats before they were forced from their homes. About 4,000 died. The Cherokee called it, the trail where they cried, meaning the white settlers who cried when they saw the condition of the Cherokees as they walked by them.

Cherokees had dogs as pets; not wolves.
Totem poles belonged to the Indians of the Northwest, not the Cherokees, who were of the Southeast.

Cherokees lived in covered wooden frames not tepees. There was a type of totem poles not like the Northwestern people. Very tall, dark people. They had a mother’s council who the chiefs had to consult with before making war or major decisions , although the chiefs had the final decision. the frame of the house was sot of like a geodesic dome, covered with grass mats. there was a frame that mats to sleep on was put indoors.
