Traveling to India for the first time?
I'm planning to travel to India next year. I was wondering how much money i should take for a month or two. I would prefer to stay in a renting house furnished/not or a hotel if i have too. I am not looking for anything fancy, i want to live like the people there. I am willing to go grocery shopping and cook my meals, but i want to also experience the native foods. I'll probably eat out only for snacks. For transportation, i am willing to walk my way and take buses/trains for far places. I really want to buy a lot of souvenirs that i can uses instead of little stickers that say "I went to INDIA!" or something cheesy like that. Another thing is I want to buy sarees, jewelry, and etc.
I have a year (or more) to gather the money.
The souvenirs & gifts might be expensive but I am willing to even it out with the traveling/eating/housing expenses.
thanx!!
If there are cities that:
-will help me to see the cultural side of India instead of western influenced but also have to be a little city like
-where i can buy traditional things
-i can enjoy entertainment
-not expensive and "cliche" big cities
please suggest!!

There is not a single culture in India. Its full of varieties.
Every state is different.
Best places for you would be -
Bhubaneswar (Orissa), Kalyani (near Kolkata, West Bengal), Madurai (Tamil nadu), Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Palghat (Kerala), Aurangabad (Maharastra), Udaipur (Rajasthan) etc.
Expense would be anywhere between - Rs. 9000/- to Rs. 12000/- ( 1 $ = Rs. 50/- approx)

wish you a enjoyable trip!!!!
Banglore, mumbai considered to be expensive..if you are not in such cities, then 10000INR is enough..as you planned to cook yourself..renting a house is easy in big cities than small one..
depends on state, life style differs..if you want to enjoy natural beauty kerala is nice place..each state has its own identity..
