What is Indian equivalent of “black tie” for women? Saris only or salwar kameez also>?

We're in Bangalore. My husband's office is having a formal evening gathering (not a sit-down dinner) but the dress code is black tie or its Indian equivalent. Do I HAVE TO wear a saree? I'm Punjabi and not very comfortable in it (tripped and fell down the last time I wore it.) And can my husband wear a formal kurta-pyjama (dark with embroidery, etc.)? HELP!!! The event is just 10 days away.

ok the indian black tie you could wear sari or whatever you feel comfortable in. If you like salwar kameez wear that, but remember it has to look formal and like you made the effort, wearing elegant jewelry, nice pair of heels, having your hair and nails done will make you look more sophisticated and elegant.
You dont have to wear a sari, If your husband wants to wear kurta pyjama that will also match you and you both will compliment each other. make sure you can both wear similar colors, or even a black salwar kameez.
dont stress, enjoy yourself and you will look stunning.
