Why is it necessary to wear a petticoat under a saree?
I have several sarees, all of which a not the least bit shear, and have found that whether or not I wear the petticoat makes no difference. All websites will say that one must wear the petticoat, unless one is wearing a nine-yard saree, but if no one can see through the layers of fabric anyway, does it matter?
I just tie the saree around myself, which provides the waistband for tucking in the pleats.

If the question is "necessary," one could argue that it is not-necessary and it depends on your convenience. However, it is customary to do so… same as it is customary to wear a bindi while draping a saree.

A petticoat is not necceassary at all. String/waistband is must to hold saree and tuck folds. It has become a practice to wear petticoat underneath saree but I don’t agree. I use to wear petticoat only if I wear a transparent saree otherwise I use only a (nadra) string band. With semi transparent sarees it may show panti, then I decide my self according to the gathering to wear or not to wear a panty. I have found it comfortable not to wear either petticoat or panty underneath saree. Some times I will wear a string panty but in any case I do not wear petticoat only wear string band. Only for transparent saree I wear petticoat. I will also advise all women always wear saree below navel for better health. I always wear saree or any bottom below my navel low on hips. It is good for health.
