Would Indians be offended by this?

Would it be offensive to wear a variation of the sari? Wearing the top part with jeans or perhaps wearing the skirt with an Americanized shirt, no scarf? Or how about even wrapping the scarf as Indian women traditionally do over my jeans and blouse?

It might seem like a silly question but it's important to me to respect Indian culture and I wouldn't want to offend by putting a new spin on the sari or seeming to "rob" this traditional dress it it is unacceptable to Indians. Is it an all or nothing thing in Indian culture?

The saris are so eloquent and I am a rather earthy girl, hence my idea of mixing it with my current wardrobe. Oh and I don't want my friends and family to think I am rejecting my roots in preference of another culture. Just looking for ways to merge them.

Peace and many thanks.

I’m Indian and I wouldn’t be offended at all. It sounds cool. But I have to wonder, no offense meant, do you know exactly what a sari is? Because you said "Wearing the top part with jeans or perhaps wearing the skirt with an Americanized shirt, no scarf?" A sari does not include a scarf. I think you’re thinking of a lehnga, which is a long skirt (usually embroidered and colorful) with a blouse and a scarf. A sari is a long long piece of fabric that is wrapped around a short blouse and a plain skirt. A sari blouse would be good to wear with pants or a skirt, but the actual sari might be hard to wear if you’re not used to the length or if you don’t have clothes that would go with it; it wouldn’t look very fashionable wrapped around jeans and a T-shirt. But if you could find a cool way to wear it with Western clothes, go for it. I’m not offended at all, I think it’s cool that you like Indian clothes.

    Hi!
I’m not an Indian, but I know as a fact that the great majority of them would not be offended at all. In fact, I think that if you mix parts of a sari with western clothing, and it looks sharp they would be amused.
The reason I know this is because must of my friends are Indians, and 99% of the many Indian suits and saris that I have were given to me by my Indian friends. So when I visit them or go to their gatherings I dress with Indian clothing.
I think you must be a fashionable girl and with your idea you’ll bring a new face to the American as well as to the Indian fashion.

Congratulations for such a great idea!!
